Article Evaluation

[edit]

I found the article I read on Gender Binary to be fairly reliable. The article did not contain any information that was distracting from the topic and all of the information was relevant, however it is important to note that while the topic is Gender binary the article mainly discusses how gender is not binary. Most of the references are up to date and the ones that aren't are used for background and framework information. However, gender binary is a very large topic and I feel that the author could have gone into further depth about the biology behind the reasoning that there are more than two sexes. I also feel that the author could have better described the differences between sex and gender. For example, Judith Lorber states, "A sex category becomes a gender status through naming, dress, and the use of other gender markers"[1]. This article is for the most part neutral, the author backs many of their statements with evidence from reputable sources, but also draws many conclusions with no backing. There is a statement that has an ambiguous source reference, but the statement is more of an opinion or drawn conclusion from the author. I like how the author included a limitations and rejections section to note that there is controversy surrounding this topic, even though it is heavily studied. Many people refute the author's statements on the talk page, and feel that the author needs to use much more backing for their arguments. This article is involved in a few other Wikiprojects, and does not go as in depth to gender binary as we did in class earlier this week.
