HEADS

[edit]

HEADS stands for Human Factors Expert Administered Debriefing Survey. The National Aerospace Laboratory of The Netherlands (NLR) uses HEADS as a debriefing technique that is based upon two pillars: 1. Interview techniques from the psychology Human Factors domain 2. Experience from aviation professionals. It is a powerful technique that quickly provides insight in how new cockpit technologies are appreciated by cockpit crew and it is used as additional means to interpret other data that were recorded during a (simulator) experiment. Besides interpreting data regarding new cockpit technologies, it is also used to evaluate the experiment itself. The scenarios, simulator en conditions under which the experiment took place are discussed as well.

Output

[edit]

A report and video tape

Methodology

[edit]

HEADS is a semi structured interview which comprises a number of topics. One interviewer performs the interview while another takes notes and records the interview on video. Prior to discussing the new cockpit technology that the experiment focuses upon, the conditions under which an experiment took place are discussed. The open questions together with expert knowledge from the interviewer make that any topic related to a new cockpit technology can be discussed while the interview can focus quickly on the what is most important according to the pilot. The interviewer can quickly adjust to the interviewees interests. In the data processing afterwards the interviewer can, with his expertise put the pilots’ remarks into context and report.
