The New England Library Association is a regional library association in New England that serves the 6 New England states: Maine, New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Vermont, and Connecticut.

History and Formation of the Organization

[edit]

The organization was founded in 1963 in order to coordinate regional activities.[1] They host an annual conference in the region in October, which has been running since 1947.[2][3][4] Since 2003 they have run The New England Library Leadership Symposium (NELLS), a leadership symposium for early and mid-career librarians, every two years.[5]

Awards

[edit]

The association has two annual awards:

  • Emerson Greenaway Award: for distinguished library service and named for the first recipient. The award was established in 1988 by then association president, Christina Kardokas as the "Great Librarian Award." It was renamed as the Emerson Greenaway award in 1990.[6] [7] Winners include Maureen Sullivan (2012), Ching Chi Chen (1994), and Emerson Greenaway (1988).[8]
  • NETSL Award for Excellence in Technical Services: focusing on technical services librarians. Recipients include Dodie Gaudet and Dr. Sheila Intner.[9]
