TESOL 2:Strategy #50- Wiki Building

Summary and benefits: -Wiki’s are websites that allow students to create and edit webpages with no prior knowledge or skills of web language. Wiki’s allow students to publish works on the internet. They also link their material to other websites, materials and videos. This gives ELLs the opportunity with guidance and assistance to refine their language skills. -Wiki does also give students the opportunity to create and collaborate on stories and multimedia presentations. -Wiki’s are great for implementing writing workshops- students can write and teachers and peers can edit their work on the wiki page.

Examples of wiki pages: -Post simple writing wiki’s, Vocabulary list, reading passages -Blogs/ Journals -Line of conversation about academic construct -Absent information folder (Materials from the day: worksheets, handouts, etc) -Digital research reports -Art projects

Steps to applying strategy: 1.Setup the wiki space you would like to use in the classroom. 2.Decided how you want to use the wiki pages in the classroom.

      a.Interactive journals
      b.Collaborated projects
      c.Research reports

3.Demonstrate how the wiki’s work to your students a.Model the steps on how to setup and edit their pages. 4.Encourage the students to get started and provide support.

Application and Examples: Mrs. Twigg’s 3rd grade class has set up wiki pages for the books they read. The first student to read the book sets up the page for that book. Mrs. Twigg adds photos and video to the page about the book and its author. As the students read the book the log into the wiki page and write about their favorite parts and questions they have about the book. Mrs. Twigg uses the pages to teach literacy elements to her class and the students add information and questions about the topics.
