Aphrodite is the Greek goddess of love, beauty and sexual rapture. According to Greek mythology she was born when Uranus (father of the gods) was castrated by his son Cronus. Cronus threw his severed genitals into the ocean, which began to churn and foam. From the aphros (sea foam) arose Aphrodite. Aphrodite was the daughter of Zeus and Dione. Aphrodite had long golden hair, she wore no clothes, but her hair was her clothes that covered her. Aphrodite had a great body and was perfect in every way. Zeus her father was afraid that the gods would fight over Aphrodite’s hand in marriage, so he married her off to the smith god Hephaestus the steadiest of the gods. Hephaestus couldn’t believe his good luck, so he would make expensive and beautiful jewels for her. Hephaestus also made an extravagant girdle of woven gold and magic that would make her irresistible. Aphrodite wasn’t very happy, that she was married to lowly black smith. Some things that Aphrodite was famous for was her contest with Hera and Athena for a title of “The Fairest” All three competitors in the competition including Aphrodite bribed the judges. Aphrodite has many famous stories about her. She was married to Hephaestus the god of fire. Aphrodite had a child by the name of Eros, the figure like cupid. Eros the creator of sensual love. They gave him magical arrows and a bow to make people fall in love. Since Aphrodite is the goddess of love, Eros follows. Aphrodite was an unique and powerful deity who whose influence was recognized in many areas of life. Popular cultures around the world represented Aphrodite as a deity of petty desires. Aphrodite was also known for her laughing at people who would fall under her spell. Aphrodite used her powers to destroy those who would try and disrupt or prevent the natural workings of love and sexuality. People described her role in instilling love or lust to people whom she either wanted to punish for what ever reason may being or to assist them with fulfilling their sexual desires they had towards others. Aphrodite had powers over all human emotion Aphrodite was a very beautiful lady, but Aphrodite didn’t really have much heroic traits apart from having affairs with different gods. Despite Aphrodite’s misunderstanding of her popular culture, Aphrodite deserves appreciation as one of the most powerful and important Greek deities. People from today would learn a lot from Aphrodite her courage and love to one another.
