The terms alternative energy and alternative fuels which were invented in the 1980's refer to the type of enegy and fuel which, (opposing the terms of conventional energy and conventional fuels) in which the sudden rise of interest was precipitated by the oil crisis of the 1980's. It also includes respectively the energy and fuel types, which were well known at thet time, but were inefficiently applied or neglected.

At the time of the oil crisis there were four main energy sources used worldwide:

  1. Fossil fuels
  2. Nuclear power
  3. Hydroelectric power
  4. Wood as fuel
