The Grundle (Suffolk, UK)

[edit]

Description

[edit]

"The Grundle" near Great Bradley in Suffolk UK is mentioned as a point of interest in the booklet "Walks in East Cambridgeshire", published by the Ramblers' Association (Cambridge Branch) in 1992. [1]. See below for location information or here for an external link to a map. It is a steep-sided ravine about 2-3 metres deep and 900m long with a chalk surface at the bottom that is about half a metre in width, surprisingly smooth and even, and dry except in the last 200m where it descends towards the River Stour.

The Ramblers' Association booklet [1] gives a clear explanation:

"The Grundle ... is a sunken passage, formed naturally by running water which, having carved its way through boulder clay, then sinks into the permeable strata beneath, forming a generally dry lane."

The Great Bradley grundle is not marked on Ordnance Survey (OS) maps. OS maps do however mark a feature called "The Grundle" in Stanton Wood near Wyken Hall, also in Suffolk. See below for location information or here for an external link to a map. The Stanton Wood feature is listed as a "Site of Special Scientific Interest" (SSSI) - see List of Sites of Special Scientific Interest in Suffolk - and is mentioned in minutes published by Suffolk County Council [2].

The existence of two such features associated with the same name suggests that "grundle" might be a generic name for such features rather than a name for a specific feature, whose usage might be restricted to Suffolk. Similar features have been noted in other places in Suffolk, for example on the Stour Valley Path near Cavendish. Only the Stanton example is marked on OS maps with the name "The Grundle" (as far as is known).

One wonders about the origin of the name. The word "grundle" appears today to have a scatological meaning - see the Urban Dictionary [3] It is not known if this usage is modern or derives from traditional Suffolk usage.
