From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

MV Osprey is a 46' Wesmac Cruiser built in Surry, Maine. It is used as a research and educational vessel for the College of the Atlantic (COA), ferrying students to either of their two research islands, Great Duck Island and Mount Desert Rock, or as a floating classroom for oceanography and other marine related courses. MV Osprey's primary purpose is to introduce students to the marine environment by creating a platform for student projects to stem from. By allowing students an opportunity to conduct practical field studies, COA gives undergraduate students a graduate student experience.

Built in 2012, MV Osprey is a well equipped workboat inspected for 38 total persons (36 passengers, 2 crew) and out 200 miles from a port of safe refuge. It has a Furuno navigation system (Navnet 3D, DFF3 sounder, radar, auto pilot VHF, SSB, Navtex) and is well equipped with safety equipment (2 @ 20 person A-Pack SOLAS life rafts, GPS-EPIRB, DSC). It also has a spacious 18' X 12' aft work-deck, 2 ton HIAB 026T boom crane, pot hauler and open transom. As a work-boat, Osprey is able to deploy and recover scientific equipment (autonomous recording buoys, wave gliders, VHF radio tags and other small to medium-sized equipment). Traveling with a small rigid inflatable boat, Osprey can also work as a transport to various remote islands along Main's coast for wildlife censusing and other environmental observations.
