Bio

[edit]

In general, I would say that I'm an outgoing and social person who enjoys meeting new people. In light of that, I also have a creative side to me. In my spare time I like to sing, song write, or play guitar. For me, music is a huge aspect of who I am. In contrast, another important characteristic to me is my nationality. I identify as a Filipino American in which I was born in the US, but my parents were born in the Philippines. Although I may not be originally from there, I speak and understand a good amount of Tagalog as well as my parents' dialect. My parents immigrated here so I could have a better education. With that being said, my future academic goal is to become a nurse practitioner or travel nurse.

Despite the fact that I may not be too fond of Wikipedia, I'm excited to finally give this website a chance. While exploring the site I discovered several components that intrigued me. For instance, this website provides a range of articles for languages across the globe that I wasn't aware of. As a result, I took a further look into what pages were provided under Tagalog. In addition, I also found the link on the sidebar in which Wiki provides a miscellaneous article for you! Hence my fascination with this feature, I'm interested in writing about Generation Z or materialism.

Article Critique

[edit]

Since I was born in America, I never really understood the roots of culture. But since I last visited the Philippines, I have become more intrigued with becoming more familiar with its history. I wanted to begin my research through the country’s art, and as a result, I visited the Okir page on Wikipedia, and found three aspects worth commenting on: its lack of citations, completeness, and how current the article really is.

Citations

[edit]

The absence of citations was the first aspect to catch my eye. As a result, the unsourced material made me question whether or not any of the information given was valid. In order to strengthen the validity of this page, future editors should consider including more citations with each fact as well as reliable sources.

Completeness

[edit]

Another aspect I would like to note is its lack of substance. Despite ample amount of background on Okir, I believe that there should be more content on other topics that help create the narrative of its origin. Some examples of subtopics would be mentioning the history of the Maranao Tribe, variations of the art form, as well as the instruments that are adorned in this design.

Currency

[edit]

Although the article was last edited in May 2018, the article lacks current sources and external links to verify the information. On this page, the only external link listed (Tugaya, Lanao del Sur Arts website) is no longer running. Fortunately, the links to other wikipedia pages still work and provide some insight to the art form.

Summary

[edit]

Overall, I think this page needs quite a bit of work in order for it stay on Wikipedia. The material presented about the Okir art style is great, but due to lack of citations, none of the information can be verified. In addition, through adding more subheadings, this will enable a wider understanding of this art form.
