Peer Community In ..., abbreviated as PCI, is a free recommendation process of scientific preprints and published articles based on the peer-review procedure.[1]

Overview[edit]

PCI is an online platform, created in 2017, and defined as an electronic journal of evaluated articles in different fields (e.g., evolutionary biology, ecology, zoology, palaeontology, neuroscience, mathematics and computational biology). PCIs assess the work that researchers have deposited on so-called pre-print servers or public archives such as arXiv, bioRxiv or HAL (belonging to the French National Centre for Scientific Research).[2]

  • Secondary sources:
    • In the developing preprinting infrastructure in life sciences, and in response to its fast growing, a number of different services have emerged that overlay peer review in some form or another, for example, biOverlay,[3] Prelights,[4] PREreview,[5] and PCI.[6]
    • The main functions of new platforms for preprint peer-review and feedback fall into three categories: curation of interesting work, validation of soundness, and feedback to authors.[7] PCI focuses on the latter two categories by providing an open peer-review process for preprints.[7]
    • In PCI, the reports, the recommendations, the digital identifiers of the successive versions of the preprints, as well as the correspondence with the authors are available free of charge to the readers.[8][9] The entire editorial process is therefore published, and the final, postprint version is released publicly.[10] PCI-recommended preprints are reliable, complete articles, that can be cited without the need for publication in traditional journals.[11][9]
    • In the scientific fields covered by PCIs, there is no competition with scientific journals as authors can first go through the PCI process, and then submit the recommended postprints to standard journals.[10]
    • PCI is a non-profit, non-commercial platform.[12] Its cost is supported by a number of scientific societies, journals, research institutes, and laboratories, and includes the time input by academics.[11]
    • To improve the robustness and integrity of methodological conclusions, PCI aims at promoting scientific repeatability.[11]
    • Peer-reviewed preprints provide proofs of anteriority and valorize the peer-review work.[13].
    • PCI is plan S compliant.[13].
    • In 2020, PCI received the LIBER Award for Library Innovation, sponsored by OCLC.[14]
