My name is Maria Osman, and I am an Abaarso Tech junior student, who is 11th grade. I was born in Hargeisa, the capital city of Somaliland, in February 26, 1996. I lived there with my family until I attended to Abaarso Tech. I have 3 brothers and 1 sister, and I am the middle child of my family. Currently, I teach orphanage kids in Hargeisa Orphanage Center once a week. I am also a staff member of News Paper Committee of my school. I wrote a couple different opinion and feature articles for the news paper. I like to write, read for fun, and do math my free time.

Education

I attended to Abaarso Tech in September 2010, and did many voluntary work-times to help little kids from Hargeisa to improve their mental Math skills. I did not teach only Orphanage kids, but I also taught primary kids from Hargeisa. Before Abaarso Tech, I went Alkhair Primary school, and I became the second top girl in the National Somaliland Examination in 2010.

Extra Curricular Activities and Work-times

In the past two years, I participated many school activities whether its work time or school committees. I took part of Hargeisa Tutoring Program which is an after school program for primary school kids. In those two years, I gained a lot of experience not only how to teach, but also how to interact with different people, take responsibility, and be patient. I taught kids with different standers; beginner, intermediate and advance. I used to make my own lesson plan and come up with different activities to make the kids focus and engage. I loved teaching those kids because I got to know them better, and I learned from them as well.

I also take part another program, the Orphanage Tutoring Program. In this program, we educate orphans in Hargeisa Orphanage Center. We don’t only teach them math and English, but we teach them manners and how to take care of themselves. I really like doing this job because I take a part of improving the lives of kids who don’t have anyone else, kids who never learn how to say please or thanks. Spending the day with them makes my week more valuable.

I am part of a couple student groups. I am one of the news paper members, as well as a member in the Education Committee. I write stories for the news paper. Last year, I wrote a feature piece about the tutoring programs that exist in my school.Also I wrote couple other opinion pieces. This year I am News Editor for the news paper. It is been a great experience because I was able to contribute my voice to the Student Voice.

Additionally, I am a member of the Education Committee. My committee members and I are responsible to work with the Student Council to make sure that the students’ academic concerns are being heard and solved if possible.

Interests and hopes

I like travelling even though I don’t travel too often; it is something I would love to try. I never went outside of my home town until two years ago when I went out to a field trip to the beach with my friends.

Back in my primary school, math was something I used to be interested in doing. I used to go to after school programs for extra help. It was one of my goals to be good at math, so I spent a lot of my time doing it. Before every summer break, I ask my teachers to give me math workshops that I can do them over the break. It is something that I don’t get tired of doing it and I love everything that involves math and logic. For instance, I like playing the board games that are involved logic. I play those board games in my free time, and I enjoyed playing them.

I enjoyed reading biographies about famous people who changed the world. The biography of Steve Jobs was one of my favorite books that I ever read. Steve Jobs is one of the people who motivated and inspired me to do many things. I enjoyed reading his book because it is full of dreams and inspiration of everyone who reads it. It remains people of their dreams and tells them to never give up on them. It shows how reaching your dream can’t be easy but everyone should work extremely hard to reach their aim. One of the biggest lessons that I learned from it was that failures aren't people who fail; they are people who fail to pick themselves up after they fail.

I want to be a software computer engineer because in addition to my interests in computers, science and math, I want to contribute and try to develop new software programs. Since the global technology is developing continuously, I believe this job will gradually change over time too. This job could apply all my different interests, so that motivated me to aim for this career. After taking career interest survey, which was based on the activities that I like to do, my personal qualifications, and the school subjects that I like, I noticed that this career was my number one choice. Considering my personal interest and goals, I chose to have this career in the future to help the technology of my country improve.

Women's Rights

Even though South Africa supposed to be a democratic government, which follow its constitution, still it is women do not have same rights as men. The constitution of South Africa mentions that women should have same rights as men, but it seems that women in South Africa still seek equality. Due to many traditional restrictions women in South Africa still do not have same rights as men. However, the political role in South African women has improved since last decade. Women participate more in politics. For instance, in 2009 2 of the 4 major political candidates in South Africa were women. In 2009,150 of the 400 parliament members were women, which show that the women’s role in politics is achieving.
