Dr. Mark A. Mandel was born on May 12, 1939 in New York, NY. His father, Charles Mandel, M.D., was a family practitioner and World War I Veteran, who taught him to treat others with respect. “I remember the many patients that my father took care of with no remuneration. He was the physician for the Veterans of Foreign Wars and took care of those American heroes with great kindness.” His mother, Sarah Mandel, was one of the first female elementary school principals in New York City. It is from both parents that he developed a love of learning, but from his mother the ability to write clearly so others, especially patients, can read his handwriting.
Growing up in the Bronx, Dr. Mandel thought everyone travelled 10 miles by subway to go to High School. He participated in many sports including baseball, stickball and “off-the-point” (NYC Special Sports), basketball and others. He attended what we now call a Magnet School, the Bronx High School of Science, and was accepted at many colleges. He and his father, a University of Nebraska graduate, loved Colgate University so he decided to attend. At Colgate University, he participated in many activities, academic and athletic, and was admitted into the Phi Beta Kappa Society in his Junior Year and graduated Magna Cum Laude a year later. Off to medical school in New York City, he interspersed research time working on DNA synthesis in the Harvard Biochemistry department as well as working on the importance of purified immunoglobulins on tumor development at the Sloan Kettering Cancer Institute. During his senior year in medical school he spent months working in kidney transplantation with Dr. Paul Russell, Chief of Surgery at Massachusetts General Hospital. He then graduated from New York University Medical School in 1964.
After medical school, he moved to Cleveland, Ohio for six years of surgery training at Case Western Reserve Medical School and University Hospitals. Then two years of research in cancer immunology at the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Maryland. After that he had fellowships at the University of Miami in Cosmetic Surgery and cleft lip repair and in Phoenix in complex hand reconstruction cases. Dr. Mandel eventually became the Chief of Plastic Surgery in Cleveland, as well as an Associate Professor in Medicine and Dermatology. He was also the Director of Plastic Surgery at the Veterans’ Hospital which was the regional center for reconstruction treating many injured Vietnam War Veterans. In Cleveland he developed and chaired many national courses in trauma for the American College of Surgeons and in cancer treatment for the American Cancer Society. This was before the continuing medical education requirement became mandatory years later for physicians in the United States.
Dr. Mandel is certified by the American Board of Surgery and the American Board of Plastic Surgery. He is a member of numerous plastic surgical and academic societies and a member of the Society of Cosmetic Chemists. He has performed over 18,000 surgical procedures with considerable expertise in the physiology and care of the skin and its contents. He has authored and published over 70 scientific investigations including some of the first studies linking the immune system, the deleterious effects of smoking and drinking and the development of cancer. Other articles included the treatment of melanoma and care of various major facial and torso injuries. He was the editor of a monograph on skin cancer published in the Clinics in Plastic Surgery. He authored one of the first books on plastic surgery for men, entitled “Sculpture, A Man’s Guide to Plastic Surgery” was published in 1988. Although there have been some advances in techniques, the principles espoused in the book ring true today. “Sculpture” offers an insight into who, what, when, why, and how to determine if one is a candidate for cosmetic surgery. This pioneer effort paved the way for many of today’s standard practices. Dr. Mandel has been very fortunate and throughout his life has participated in many philantrophic efforts. Consequently, the Foundation for the Advancement of College Education, F.A.C.E. was established and is a federally approved non-profit organization. The goal is to provide scholarships for worthwhile college students in need of financial aid and to help keep our youth intellectually strong.
Currently, a neutral court appointed medical expert, he determines what should be done for seriously injured individuals. Patients are referred to him from all over the country and evaluated in his practice in Beverly Hills, CA. for an accurate medical assessment of complex injury problems. Dr. Mandel lives happily with his wife, Emilia, an outstanding Mediterranean style cook. They enjoy a healthy life style with many trips each week to the local Sports Club, as well as many hikes in the wonderful greater Los Angeles Parks.
