User:Martin Hogbin/Unfortunate state of affairs at the 'Tree shaping article'

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

This page is for my understanding of the unfortunate state of affairs that we have at the Tree shaping article. Anyone who disagrees with my assessment is welcome to create a page in their own user space or to comment in the talk page here but not to edit here. All edits by anyone else will be immediately removed.

The purpose of this page is to allow new editors to be informed of the history of the dispute without my having to repeat the same information on the 'Tree shaping' talk page. This page will not contain attacks or criticism of other editors or any other form of unwikipedian behaviour. If you believe that I am guilty of this please let me know on this talk page or on my main talk page.

Anyone interested is encouraged to thoroughly check out the facts that I state here.

History[edit]

There were originally two articles - Arborsculpture and Pooktre

There was some discussion in Arborsculpture about the suitability of the name

Pooktre was nominated for deletion and in the discussion on this AfDhero decided in good faith to merge the two articles into one called 'Tree Shaping'. There is no indication in that discussion of where the name came from or any reference to any reliable sources although AfDHero stated that in was a common term when Googled. The first reference that I can find to the term being used for this art in the talk pages is in 2008 by Blackash, a partner in Pooktre.

Confusion over the name[edit]

The term 'Tree shaping' is indeed widely used within arborculture for the process of pruning generally mature trees to give them a natural shape and consequently it appears in Google searches.
