Real Estate Photography[edit]

Real Estate Photography is a sub genre of the Photography discipline that is closely related to Architectural Photography, but different in a number of ways. While both Real Estate Photography and Architectural Photography are the practice of capturing interior and exterior photographs, the way in which the images are captured and used can vary greatly. At its core, real estate photography is used for marketing and sales, as opposed to architectural photography, which is more artistic and expressive in nature.

History[edit]

Until around 2001, real estate photography was only used in things like printed marketing brochures and flyers. Once the internet became accessible, real estate photographs started to become used and viewed via local MLS websites.[1]

Techniques[edit]

Real Estate Photography is the practice of featuring the full house primarily using a wide angle lens. A wide angle lens is the best type of lens for real estate photography due to its ability to show more of the house in a single photo[2]. The main goal of real estate photography is to show the property in a way that entices possible buyers to either visit the house in person, or purchase the house sight unseen. Ideally, real estate photography shows how all of the rooms of the house connect and interact with each other to give the viewer an accurate representation of the entire home.[3]

Interior[edit]

There are various lighting techniques used for interior real estate photography. A few standard lighting techniques are HDR lighting, single flash exposures, or a mix of natural light and artificial light, usually supplied by a flash, commonly referred to as 'flambient lighting', a combining of the words "flash" and "ambient" lighting.[4]

Exterior[edit]

Exterior lighting is almost always lit completely by natural light. The main exception is with twilight real estate photography, in which exterior photographs can be lit by a mix of the available ambient light, interior and exterior lights, and flashes inside and outside the home.[5]
