Karel Schadt is a landscape and impressionist painter. He was born in Böhmen (today Příbram) and grew up under Masaryk and the 1st republic. He died at the age of 67 in 1955 while living under the communist regime.

He was influenced by 19th century French impressionists such as Claude Monet and Pissarro. Between 1911 and 1916, he was a pupil of Alois Kalvoda. He exhibited in Vienna, Prague in the salons of Rubešov, Topičov, Weinfurt and Ročák then was appointed professor of painting at the academy of Příbram. His success allows him to live from his painting as he painted and sold over 200 canvases during his lifetime.

He painted many landscapes of his native region around Příbram (hilly and wooded area 40 km south of Prague) but also the Slovak Tatra mountains. His travels gave him the opportunity to vary his themes: the coast near Nice becomes the subject of several oils, Dubrovnik as well. His style has evolved a lot and asserted itself during his career. His paintings became more and more intense in terms of colors and he perfected the technique of painting forests and snowy landscapes, becoming his trademark. Even his way of signing changed with his art. From a thin signature barely legible on his first paintings, he switched to a signature in bold capitals very visible on his later works.
