The Michinoku Coastal Trail (Japanese: みちのく潮風トレイルみちのくしおかぜトレイル, Hepburn: Michinoku Shiokaze Toreiru) is an approximately 700 kilometres (430 mi) long trail in northern Japan that follows the Pacific coast from Hachinohe in Aomori Prefecture to Sōma in Fukushima Prefecture. It was created by the Japanese Ministry of the Environment as a measure to revitalize the coast that was devastated by the 2011 Tōhoku earthquake and tsunami.

The name Michinoku (みちのく) is an old name for the the Tōhoku region. It is another pronunciation of Mutsu no kuni (陸奥国, Mutsu Province), which existed up until the Meiji Restoration.

History

[edit]

The Michinoku Coastal Trail was planned by the Ministry of Environment in an effort to revitalize the the Pacific coast of Tōhoku that was devastated by the 2011 Tōhoku earthquake and tsunami and better present the scenic characteristics of the area. Parts of the trail were opened in 2017. The entire trail is set to fully open by March 2019.[1]
