The Michinoku Coastal Trail (Japanese: みちのく潮風トレイル, Hepburn: Michinoku Shiokaze Toreiru) is an approximately 700 kilometres (430 mi) long trail in northern Japan that follows the Pacific coast from Hachinohe in Aomori Prefecture to Sōma in Fukushima Prefecture. It was created by the Japanese Ministry of the Environment as a measure to revitalize the coast that was devastated by the 2011 Tōhoku earthquake and tsunami.
Naming
[edit]The name Michinoku (みちのく) is an old name for the the Tōhoku region. It is another pronunciation of Mutsu no kuni (陸奥国, Mutsu Province), which existed up until the Meiji Restoration.
