A ```Unisex Public Toilet``` (or bathroom) is a separate bathroom that is not gender specific and usually consists of just one toilet and sink, instead of many; like most public restrooms. It offers more privacy and can be used for individuals that need help using the restroom, such as the elderly or physically handicapped. It can also be used for parents who have a different gender from their child who don’t want to bring their child into their own gendered restroom or don’t want their child going into their own gendered restroom alone. There are other examples of families using a unisex bathroom, such as having many small children, but a new concept for using a ``unisex public bathroom`` is for people who are [transgender]. It would allow them their own bathroom so they would not have to worry about whether they can use the restroom according to their biological gender or their gender that they identify with.
In latest news, certain businesses, such as [Target], have advocated for transgender people to use the bathroom that suits the gender they feel they are. While many people support this, there are others who do not. There are those who do not support transgender people in the first place, and there are those who do not support transgender people to use the restroom of their choice. They argue that people should base their restrooms off their biological gender. There are also those who fear that people, mainly men, will pretend to be transgender to go into the restroom of their opposite sex to prey on others; mostly women and young girls. Some even discuss the cost of creating ```Unisex Public Toilets``` because they do not support tax dollars being used and certain businesses do not wish to use their own money to supply a unisex bathroom.
```Unisex Public Toilets``` provide an alternative for transgender people. They allow them a safe place to use the restroom without fear of discrimination, although some argue that forcing transgender people to use a separate bathroom would be discrimination. Some feel by creating a unisex bathroom, it will be a target for hate crimes against transgender people.
Even though many large businesses have a separate restroom, they are usually labeled as a “family” restroom. Many small businesses and restaurants only have gender specific restrooms, and this leaves transgender people to make a choice whether to use the restroom of their chosen gender or biological gender.
In the next upcoming years, with more people coming out as transgender, there will be more talk of this issue and perhaps laws and regulations to enforce.
