Carlos Tomás Perujo y Ruiz de Gopegui (Ezcaray, La Rioja, Spain, November 4, 1849 - San Carlos, Maldonado, Uruguay, June 13, 1902) was a lawyer, judge, journalist and Hispanic-Uruguayan politician of relevant performance in his adopted homeland, Uruguay, particularly in the towns of Maldonado and San Carlos, as well as in Rivera's beginnings as a department's capital.
Early life in Spain
[edit]Carlos Perujo was born in the town of Ezcaray, Logroño, the son of a family with a comfortable social position, although without great wealth. His paternal and maternal ancestry was linked to long-standing families in the region with interests in agricultural farms and the production of textiles. He became an orphan in childhood and possibly was raised by uncles and aunts until he entered college.
He began his law studies at the University of Madrid in 1870 and moved to Zaragoza around 1873, where he continued until July 1874. Then, he abruptly left Spain, possibly due to the political instability of the time and the growing threat of the introduction of compulsory military service.
