In 1971, during War of Liberation, resigned from Pakistan Government in Switzerland in protest against illegal arrest of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, and Army burn and kill action in Dhaka. Set up Bangladesh govt. office in exile in GENEVA on behalf of Mujibnagar Government.


Waliur Rahman born in September 30, 1940 in a respectable Muslim family in Jhenaidah[1] , in an enlightened village called Kancherkole. His Late father Al-Hajj Dr. Habibur Rahman was Medical Practitioner, Businessman and philanthropist. His grandfather was disciple of Haji Shariatullah an Islamist Reformer. He was given title of Faraizi because of his creative role in spreading true value of Islam. His maternal Grandfather was a Judge of Calcutta Court. His late mother Mrs. Firoza Rahman. Grandmother was a Persian scholar.

Early Life and Career

Chairman, Bangladesh Heritage Foundation, National Security & Counter Terrorism, Center for Genocide & De-radicalization Research, Democracy, Security and Human Rights Research[2]. Former Secretary, Ministry of Foreign Affairs Special Envoy of the Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina (1997-1998) Joined Pakistan Foreign Service in 1966. He resigned in Geneva in 1971, in protest against the Pakistan military action in Bangladesh and declared allegiance to the Mujibnagar Govt. Former Director, Bangladesh Institute of Law and International Affairs (BILIA). As Special Envoy of the Former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina visited South Africa to fetch President Nelson Mandela to Bangladesh on the occasion of Silver Jubilee of celebration. Chairman Yaseer Arafat of Palestine and President Suleyman Demirell of Turkey also attended the ceremony as guests of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

In 1972 he was involved in fine-tuning the Law of International Crimes (Tribunal) with assistance of International Commission of Jurists (ICJ) Ian McDermott and Prof. Jescheck and Prof. Otto Von Triffter, Max Plank Institute of International Criminal Law, Freiburg, Baden Baden, West Germany. They assisted Justice Jackson, chief Prosecutor of Nuremberg Trial for prosecuting the German Leaders who committed history’s worst genocide, the holocaust, gassed and killed over six million jews.

Career

1. Former Pakistan Foreign Service Officer before Independence of Bangladesh- 2. During the war of Liberation, I resigned from Pakistan Government in Geneva/Berne and worked for Mujibnagar Government. Political refugee for 9 months. 3. Served in Indonesia. Posted to Switzerland. First Head of Mission setup Permanent Mission to UN in Geneva,1971-1975. Served at Organization of Islamic Conference 1978. 4. Served in Switzerland, Geneva, New York, Deputy Ambassador to the Security Council and Deputy Permanent Representative to the United Nations, New York.(1979-1982) 5. Speaking at the Security Council during the China – Vietnam war. 6. Speaking at UNGA 7. Served as Ambassador in Rome, Tunisia and Switzerland.(1986-1992) 8. Former Secretary, Ministry of Foreign Affairs. 9. Assisted Hon’ble Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in 2009 in setting up the International Crimes Tribunal Bangladesh (ICTBD) to try war criminals who committed crimes of Genocide and Crimes against humanity during war of liberation in 1971.Organized a day-long Orientation Course for the Judges, Prosecutors and Investigators under Bangladesh Heritage Foundation Banner. 10. Working as Aide of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina for ICTBD. 11. In my diplomatic service, I spent half of my carrier at the United Nations System – New York and Geneva. 12. At Bangladesh Institute of Law and International Affairs (BILIA) Edited a) Single Currency in South Asia b) Roundtable on New Regionalism and South Asia c) Transit and Transshipment d) Judicial Training in the New Millennium e) Bangladesh Journal of Law: A Special Issue dedicated to Criminal Justice System: a joint publication of BILIA and Department of Justice, Govt. of Canada.

Bangabondhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman stops at Geneva on his way back to Dhaka, August 10, 1973. He attended Commonwealth Summit at Ottawa, 2-10 August 1973. In Geneva he addressed Bangladesh Envoys Conference at Hotel La Réserve. Pakistan resigned in protest against admission of Bangladesh to the Commonwealth. Secretary General Arnold smith played a crucial role in our admission process.
