His musical career began in 1983, when he and his brother Luís José Costa, Leandro, decided to try an artistic career and formed the country duo Leandro & Leonardo. In June 1998, Leandro died of a rare lung cancer and Leonardo left for a solo career.

It has sold over 35 million records.

Biography

[edit]

Leonardo was born in Goianápolis, a city located in the Metropolitan Region of Goiânia, in the state of Goiás, on July 25, 1963, the fourth of eight siblings. Son of Seu Avelino Virgulino da Costa, who died on January 11, 2015 at the age of 78, and Dona Carmem Divina Eterno da Silva, who died on April 1, 2023, at the age of 87. Leonardo had as an inseparable companion his brother Leandro (Luis José), a year and eleven months older, born on August 15, 1961. Due to numerous difficulties, the family moved to Carmo do Rio Verde, also in Goiás, to try a new opportunity. Unfortunately, the course of things was not as expected and, therefore, the family returned to Goianápolis, where Seu Avelino started to work as a sharecropper in the tomato field. Since he was little, Leandro was the shyest, but he dreamed of a better life for his family. In the tomato plantation he was agile and in the fields, the obligatory repertoire was the songs of Chitãozinho & Xororó. Seu Avelino, like Leandro, was always accompanied by his guitar, awakening his children's attention to music. Leonardo, on the other hand, always very energetic and lively, despite the many jokes, had a serious side and found a way to earn more by doing extra jobs, and dreamed of a better life for his entire family.[4]

Again, due to the difficulties experienced, the family was forced to leave their hometown and go to Goiânia. The hard experience made everyone decide to return to Goianápolis. At that time, with the encouragement of friends, Leandro dedicated his free time to music and joined the band Os Dominantes, which played hits by Roberto Carlos and the Beatles. Meanwhile, Leonardo only sang at work, but little by little the two brothers began to rehearse as a duo and decided, with the support of the whole family, to return to Goiânia to pursue a career in music. Arriving in the capital, the two boys soon found jobs to support themselves. Leonardo worked in a pharmacy and Leandro in the central market. Every spare minute was devoted to rehearsals. Tio Zé, Dona Carmem's brother, traveled with them and was in charge of getting performances for the duo, as well as Anselmo, Leonardo's boss. It was at this time that the duo's name was chosen. When they found out that one of the pharmacy employees had twins named Leandro and Leonardo, they had no doubts. The performances didn't earn much money, but even so they didn't get discouraged and with that the first contract came up and the duo signed, for four minimum wages, to sing in a better place. From there, they began to receive proposals for presentations in neighboring cities and invitations to perform on television. The first program to invite the duo to participate was "Beira da Mata", shown by TV Tocantins, from Anápolis, Goiás. The presentation was not a success due to the nervousness of the two, but even so, they were invited many times later, as they became more known, mainly in the interior of the regions of Goiás and Mato Grosso. The first album, recorded with their own resources and the help of friends, came out in 1984 and featured the song "Hoje Acordei Chorando". The disc was sold in the bars where they sang. In search of professional fulfillment, Leandro & Leonardo constantly traveled to São Paulo, with the financial help of a jeweler from Goiânia, to try to get a contract with a record company. At that time, the song "Contradições" (by Martinha and César Augusto), recorded on the 1986 album Leandro & Leonardo, was beginning to become known.[citation needed] Categoria:!Artigos que carecem de notas de rodapé desde abril de 2021 Categoria:!Artigos que carecem de notas de rodapé sem indicação de tema But the success of the duo happened with the hit "Entre Tapas e Beijos", recorded on the third album. In the fourth volume, Leandro & Leonardo, released in 1990, the song "Pense em Mim" broke all radio play records, giving an even greater impact to the duo who, at that time, conquered all Brazilians. The release of the album included a show at Canecão, a concert hall in Rio de Janeiro, which for the first time opened its doors to the boys of Goianápolis. With so much success, the duo soon conquered the small screen. TV Globo hired them to present the program Leandro & Leonardo Especial. Increasingly admired, known and loved by the public, they became one of the duos that sold the most records in the history of Brazilian music. In fifteen years of career, they have already accumulated 25 million albums sold. In 1995, the duo teamed up with Chitãozinho & Xororó and Zezé di Camargo & Luciano to present one of Rede Globo's most successful programs, Amigos, which appeared on the schedule as a year-end special and which, later, due to to a large audience, began to be broadcast weekly on the station's schedule. The result of the attraction was so positive that the meeting of the three duos led to the production of four CDs Amigos, which sold millions of copies throughout Brazil. At the height of his success and close to releasing the album Um Sonhador, Leandro started to feel bad and after a lot of struggle he couldn't resist lung cancer and died on June 23, 1998. After having received the homage of thousands of fans in São Paulo, he was buried in Goiânia, where he also received the affection of relatives and friends. Leonardo, after receiving support from family, friends and fans of the duo, released his first solo album entitled Tempo in 1999. Currently, after 11 CDs and 4 DVDs released, Leonardo has sold more than 15 million copies, and fulfills the dream of continuing the career of the duo Leandro & Leonardo.

After the accident of his son, Pedro Leonardo, in April 2012, he announced that he would gradually end his career.[5]

In 2013, he published the autobiography "Não Aprendir Dizer Adeus", published by Casa da Palavra.[6][7]

In the same year, he left Universal Music after seven years and returned to Sony Music.

In 2014, he launches a project together with singer Eduardo Costa, entitled "Cabaré" where they recall great hits from the roots of country music.

Personal life

[edit]

Relationships

[edit]

Between 1985 and 1988 he was married to teacher Maria Aparecida Dantas, with whom he had a son, the singer Pedro Leonardo, born on June 29, 1987. In the following years he had two more daughters from brief relationships: the agronomist Monyque Isabella, born in October 10, 1991 with businesswoman Sandra Helena; and digital influencer Jéssica Beatriz, born on March 17, 1994 to jewelry designer Priscila Beatriz.[8]

In 1994 he started dating journalist Poliana Rocha, whom he married on July 25, 1995 and had a son, singer Zé Felipe, born on April 21, 1998. During the time he was married, Leonardo had a relationship extramarital affair with singer Liz Vargas, lead singer of Banana Split, with whom he had a son, Matheus Vargas, born on May 10, 1998, just 19 days after Zé Felipe. Due to betrayal, the marriage with Poliana came to an end at that moment. Between 2001 and 2002, he dated dancer Naira Ávila and had his sixth child, actor João Guilherme, born on February 1, 2002. At the end of 2002, he resumed his marriage to Poliana.[9]

Leonardo has five grandchildren: Maria Sophia (2011) and Maria Vitória (2018), daughters of Pedro Leonardo; Noah (2016), son of Jessica Beatriz; Maria Alice (2021) and Maria Flor (2022), daughters of Zé Felipe.[10][11][12]

Accident

[edit]

On November 17, 2003, Leonardo overturned a Land Rover jeep, causing an accident that killed his friend Sebastião Figueiredo Arantes, then 47 years old, and left four injured on the GO-070 highway. Leonardo denied that he was speeding and claimed car problems. However, the director of the Coima dealership, part of the Land Rover network, Dirceu Bernardon, said that the car was borrowed: "There's nothing about that test-drive thing. He asked me for the car to travel and I lent it." As for the possibility of mechanical problems with the car, Dirceu also says that "the car was completely overhauled before the loan. Full tank, water and oil checked and exactly 1,853 kilometers driven. There's no such thing as a broken axle or anything like that".[13]

Controversy

[edit]

In March 2020, Leonardo was criticized on the internet, due to the following statement in a show:

Thirty million in Brazil that have HIV. Let's be honest? Nobody uses a condom. Now 900 confirmed cases [of coronavirus] and you have to wear a mask? The conclusion we reach is: better to die f*** than coughing

The NGO/AIDS Forum of the State of São Paulo (Foaesp), where more than a hundred organizations that act in the fight against AIDS are concentrated, released a note of repudiation of the singer's statements.

Without considering his responsibility as an opinion maker and influencer of millions of fans, the artist trivializes two important health problems that mobilize Brazilian society: HIV and COVID-19. Aside from misinformation – the Ministry of Health estimates that there are 866,000 people with HIV in the country – Leonardo does a disservice to actions to control the circulation of the corona virus and to mobilizations to encourage the constant use of condoms.[14]
