Amex House "dominates the sweep of Carlton Hill"[1] and is visible on the skyline from much of Brighton.[2] Designed by British architecture firm Gollins Melvin and Ward, the building has prominent white horizontal bands of glass-reinforced plastic and blue-tinted glazing, and its corners are chamfered to give it a more rounded appearance.[1][3] It is nicknamed "The Wedding Cake",[4] and its clean, futuristic design has been said to evoke Thunderbirds.[5] The building is generally considered to be one of the better postwar additions to Brighton's building stock,[5][1] although it affects views into and out of the neighbouring conservation area.[2] About 3,000 people work at the building, making American Express the largest private employer in Brighton and Hove.[4]
