Different conspiracy theories have been presented in the years after the event, leading to the 9/11 Truth Movement, a small group of organizations and individuals calling for additional investigation in to the events surrounding the attacks. These theories mostly allege, to varying degrees, that the U.S. Government either allowed the attacks to occur or carried them out under a false flag operation; or that the story put forth by the Government and media is in some way inaccurate. Supporters (who prefer to be known as truthers) cite media reports and statements by public officials that supposedly point to advance knowledge, motives for the attacks, or false information which, if true, contradict the "official account", and therefore constitute evidence of a cover-up. Despite receiving coverage in the media and on the internet, these conspiracy theories have failed to gain mainstream acceptance.
