The Fidelity Trust building (official address 465 Congress Street, Portland, ME) was Maine's first skyscraper. The 10-story structure was finished in 1910 [1] and stands at 135 feet. It was designed by well-known Boston architect G. Henri Desmond and was his largest and most prominent work at the time. When it was completed The Fidelity building was one of New England’s premier skyscrapers and the tallest building in Maine. Designed in the Gothic Beaux-Arts style, this building changed Portland’s skyline and helped cement Portland as Maine’s economic epicenter. At the time of its completion The Fidelity Building opened to great fanfare and still to this day is an important visual anchor on Monument Square. Listed as a historic Portland Landmark, this building has been cherished for over 100 years from visitors and Portlanders alike.
As of 2019, the Fidelity Building is Maine's 11th tallest building and it's 4th largest office building. It is next to the Time & Temperature Building. It is notable for the ornate facade that covers the side and in particular the top of the structure. Located in Monument Square the building has commanding easterly views of downtown Portland and Casco Bay. It's westerly views show Back Cove and out to the White Mountains and Mt. Washington in New Hampshire.
Through time it has been known as the Maine Bank and Trust Building and presently (due to its tenant and large sign at the top) the People's United Bank Building. Other tenants include;
