After his clerkship, Barrett practiced at Sidley Austin LLP in Washington, D.C., and at Barnes & Thornburg LLP in South Bend, Indiana.[9] Barrett's practice focused on white-collar criminal defense and commercial litigation.[10] Barrett represented a coal-mine operator in a high profile, four-week criminal trial[11] in the Eastern District of Kentucky against charges of vote buying and illegal campaign contributions.[12] Barrett also represented a counseling center before the Indiana Supreme Court[13] to protect the confidentiality of its medical records in an investigation linked to a notorious murder case.[14]
