Bhatt began his professional career in 2013 as a resident physician at the Eerie Family Health Center in Chicago where he remains at present. He also served as the Managing Deputy Commissioner and Chief Innovation Officer for the Chicago Department of Health from 2013 to 2015. While in this position, Bhatt led an initiative to use predictive analytics to improve city food inspections.[1] He also strove for greater application of the technology in healthcare for public health surveillance and research and coauthored several articles on the topic of predictive analytics. [2]

In 2015, the Illinois Hospital Association (IHA) appointed Bhatt first chief health officer. With the primary objective of improving IHA services, Bhatt's role put him in charge of physician activities and clinical leadership. [3] In June of the same year, Bhatt was appointed president of the Midwest Alliance for Patient Safety (MAPS), a patient safety organization geared toward advancing healthcare quality through education and data usage.[4] He remained in both positions until September of 2016, at which time he took over as chief medical officer and president of the Health Research and Educational Trust (HRET) of The American Hospital Association (AHA) where he remains today.[5]
