Flesh and Blood (colloquially known as FAB) is a trading card game created by James White and released on October 2019 by Legend Story Studios.[1]

A player in Flesh and Blood takes the role of a Hero equipped for battle, and combats other players as Heroes by attacking them with weapons and actions, using items and equipment, and casting spells, represented on the cards from their respective decks. A player defeats the opponent by dealing damage to their Hero, reducing their health total, until that Hero’s health total is 0. The game is heavily influenced by many previous card games such as Magic the Gathering, but does not feature summoning and controlling creatures and instead focuses on direct combat between the representing Heroes.

Flesh and Blood can be played by two or more players with printed cards. There are various formats which fall into 2 main categories: constructed and limited. Constructed formats involve players creating decks from cards that they own and typically feature larger decks (Classic Constructed has a minimum of 60 cards per deck) and longer games. Limited formats involve players building a deck from cards they have selected from a pool of random cards, and typically feature smaller decks (minimum of 30 cards per deck) and faster games.

New cards are printed and released on a regular basis through additional sets. <Professional scene>. International community. Secondary market.

Gameplay[edit]

A standard game of Flesh and Blood involves two players acting as Heroes who are engaged in combat. Each player has a Hero card, and a deck, either previously constructed or made from a limited pool of cards for the event. A player starts the game with "health" equal to the Health value indicated by their Hero card, and loses the game when their health is reduced to zero.

Before the game begins, players reveal their heroes to one another. Then each player selects their equipment and weapon(s) that will be in play at the start of the game as well as the cards in their deck. The decks are shuffled and the game begins with both players drawing up to their Hero's Intellect. The turn player starts with one action point and zero resources. Players play cards witch action cards. When a player does not have enough resources to pay the cost of playing a card, they may pitch one cards at a time from their hand to the pitch zone to generate resources until the cost is paid - leftover resources last until the end of the turn. When a player makes an attack, the attack is resolved with a series of steps: an attack step where the attack is played, a defend step where the defender declares, a reaction step where both the attacker and defender can boost their attack and defense respectively, a damage calculation step where the power of the attack and the defense are compared and the defender takes damage equal to the difference, and a resolution step where other effects are resolved.

At the end of their turn, a player may place a card from their hand into their arsenal (if it is currently empty) which can be played in subsequent turns, places the cards in the pitch zone to the bottom of their deck in any order, and draws up to their Hero's Intellect.

Most actions are resolved using layers on the chain, similar to a stack in magic the gathering, or stack in computer programming. It allows complex interactions to resolve deterministically.
