The Defeat of John Hawkins: A Biography of His Third Voyage is a non-fiction history book written by Rayner Unwin and first published by George Allen & Unwin in 1960. It describes the expedition made by 16th-century navigator John Hawkins to the San Juan de Ulúa in Mexico. It was published in America by Macmillan in 1960.

Critical reception[edit]

D. B. Quinn, writing in the English Historical Review, described the book as "detailed and responsibly written", but was critical of the work's references. In particular, he noted the fact that Unwin did not seem to have consulted Spanish texts or monographs in his research, with the exception of a few primary sources in English translation. There are no footnotes, and only a short bibliography of key works.[1]-more here Winthrop D. Jordan had similar concerns, writing in The William and Mary Quarterly.
