Morris Palter
Morris Palter was an original member of the band treble charger. Answering an ad in Toronto's weekly local paper, "NOW Magazine," Palter audition for Bill Priddle and Greig Nori. At that time (summer 1992), the band was called Warehouse. Roughly a year later, Robert "Rosie" Martin auditioned for the band, solidifying the line-up for the group, now called nc-17. Due to a pending lawsuit by another group named nc-17, the band changed their name to treble charger (summer 1994). Morris stayed with treble charger until August of 1996.
Upon Palter's departure from the band, he began studying novelty ragtime xylophone music with virtuoso percussionist Bob Becker (Steve Reich Ensemble, NEXUS). In 1997, Palter moved to The Netherlands from Toronto to continue his classical percussion studies at the Koninklijk Conservatorium. He stayed there for two years, from 1997 to 1999. During this period, Morris worked on contemporary percussion chamber and solo works, including those composed by Iannis Xenakis, Karlheinz Stockhausen, Toru Takemitsu, John Cage, and others. While living in Holland, Morris met percussionist Steven Schick (Bang On a Can All-Stars, music faculty at the University of California, San Diego). Upon graduating from the KC, Morris was invited by Schick to continue his percussion studies at UCSD and to join the percussion group redfish bluefish (Artistic Director, Schick).
From 1999-2005, Morris completed both a Master's in Music degree and a Doctorate in Music degree at UCSD. He is currently a Lecturer in Music at UCSD. For the past years, Morris has traveled extensively throughout Europe, North America, and Asia, performing both contemporary music and ragtime on some of the most prestigious festivals and stages including Carnegie Hall in NYC, Disney Hall in Los Angeles, Cite International des Arts in Paris, the Acousmania Festival in Bucharest, the Bohem Jazz and Ragtime Festival in Hungary, the Seoul International Computer Music Festival, and at various PAS festivals. In April 2007, Mode Records released a 3-cd set of the complete percussion works of Iannis Xenakis as recorded by redfish bluefish. Palter's playing can also be heard on John Zorn's Tzadik label, New World Records, and Centaur Records.
In 2000, Morris co-founded NOISE (San Diego New Music) with flutist Lisa Cella, guitarist Colin McAllister. Current members also include pianist Christopher Adler. Palter also founded the Speak-Easy Duo (Palter - xylophone, McAllister - guitar) in 2003. In 2006, Palter also co-founded Metasax and DRUMthings with technology artist Matthew Burtner.
