Himalayan salt lamps are a form of internal lighting and decoration. Their shape often ranging from irregular chunks to clean cut cubes. These shapes are turned into lamps when a small portion of the underside is hollowed out and a light with a base is inserted in. salt lamps provide both an atmosphere of ambiance and a host of possible health benefits. When turned on, salt lamps emit a warming glow from a dark red to a brilliant bright orange.

Origin[edit]

Despite the name, the special pink salt does not actually come from the Himalayas. It instead is mined from a site in Khewra, Pakistan[1]

The Khewra salt deposit was discovered in 326 BC when Alexander the Great crossed over the region. When he stopped to rest, he took note that the horses were all licking at the stones beneath their feet. A soldier then tasted it himself, and realized that they were standing on top of a massive salt deposit. Now after so long, the salt deposit is still a functioning mine in Pakistan.

Uses and Benefits[edit]

It is said that Himalayan salt lamps contribute to increasing the amount of negative ions in a certain atmosphere. The way that this works is that water is attracted to the salt block. When the water then evaporates the salt block releases negative ions.

Having a large amount of negative ions in the atmosphere is believed to have health benefits, such as boosting serotonin levels, which is what influences a person's mood.[2] Researchers discovered that when people with depressive symptoms were exposed to high amounts of negative ions, they said that they felt an increase in their mood.

salt lamps also make for better night lights than the traditional lights, this is because most traditional lights emit blue light, which can affect the body's circadian rhythm and sleep hormones.

Some even consider salt lamps as a form of Halotherapy, which is the inhalation of salty air as a form of medical treatment.

Studies[edit]

"Columbia University studies of people with winter and chronic depression show that negative ion generators relieve depression as much as antidepressants."[3]

"negative ions increase the flow of oxygen to the brain; resulting in higher alertness, decreased drowsiness, and more mental energy,"[3]

"They also may protect against germs in the air, resulting in decreased irritation due to inhaling various particles that make you sneeze, cough, or have a throat irritation."[3]

Styles[edit]

There are many uniquely shaped salt lamps on the market, which turns the Salt Lamp from a mere light source to a piece of attractive decor.

The cube is one of the most common models of the Salt Lamp. Its simple yet modern design makes it easy to place anywhere and still not look out of place. Another common model is an irregular salt lamp. This model is essentially a hollowed out chunk of pink salt. Its shape captures its origin and looks like a freshly mined chunk of salt.
