The Hollywood Fringe is a Fringe Festival in Los Angeles derived from the original Edinburgh, Scotland model.
It is an annual, open-access, community-derived event celebrating freedom of expression and collaboration in the performing arts community. It takes place annually every June in Hollywood, CA. Performers are encouraged to "bring their own venue" in found-spaces as a method of enhancing the vibrancy of the local arts scene.
Participation in the Hollywood Fringe is completely open and uncensored. This free-for-all approach underlines the festival’s mission to be a platform for artists without the barrier of a curative body. The festival's goal is to exhibit the diverse and cutting-edge points-of-view without censorship. Additionally, by creating an environment where artists must self-produce their work, the Fringe seeks to motivate its participants to cultivate a spirit of entrepreneurialism in the arts. It includes programming from the mediums of theatre, dance, musicals, comedy, clowning, burlesque, opera and music.
The Hollywood Fringe is the largest performing arts festival in Los Angeles. Its 2013 Festival featured 204 shows and 1,013 performance across 52 performance spaces in central Hollywood. Over 25,000 tickets were sold in 2013. As of 2014, the Hollywood Fringe is entering its fifth year of production. It is currently the largest, open-access performing arts festival (based on number of productions) in the United States.
It is an international festival having hosted performers from England, Scotland, Wales, Ireland, Nepal, Australia, Brazil, Canada, Japan and Nigeria.
Participation
[edit]Any performance company (national or international) may perform as a part of the Hollywood Fringe so long as they have acquired a venue within the specified bounds of the festival. As of 2014, those bounds are: Franklin Ave, Western Ave, Melrose Ave and La Brea Ave.
Venues
[edit]Any venue located within the festival's boundaries may host participating productions so long as they carry an insurance policy
Awards
[edit]- In 2013 the Hollywood Fringe Festival was awarded a "Charlie Award" for Theatre Arts for its contribution to the revitalization to the Hollywood cultural scene.
