Yinager Dessie, Ph.D., was the ninth governor of the National Bank of Ethiopia (NBE) (2018~2023), the institution responsible for maintaining price stability, ensuring a sound financial system and facilitating economic growth in Ethiopia. He has a strong academic background and extensive experience in policy design and implementation at various levels of government.
Dessie obtained his first degree in economics from Addis Ababa University in Ethiopia, his second degree from the International Institute of Social Studies in the Netherlands, and his third degree from the University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences in Vienna, where he focused on the role of institutions for sustainable land management in Ethiopia. He also received training from prestigious universities such as Harvard, Yale, London School of Economics, and Wales University.
Before becoming the NBE governor in 2018, Dessie served as minister at the National Planning Commission, where he guided the macro-economic management of the nation. He also participates in several boards and councils related to financial sector development, macroeconomic stability and growth, and foreign exchange management. In addition, he is vice-chairman of the National Financial Inclusion Council and board chairman and board member of various public institutions and public-private partnerships.
Under his leadership, the NBE has implemented various transformative measures that have improved the performance and stability of the financial sector, despite external and internal challenges, including the Covid-19 pandemic. He also oversaw the successful completion of the demonetization process in September 2020, which increased financial inclusion, intermediation, and resource mobilization through the banking system.
Dessie is a man for all seasons and all reasons, which has taken the NBE to the forefront of Ethiopia's economic development. He leads a team of over 1000 dedicated employees and managers who strive to enhance the bank's efficacy and service delivery. As a result, he enjoys the operational independence accorded to the bank and its accountability to the highest government authority.
