Giada Nicole Arney is a research scientist at NASA Goddard Spaceflight Center. Arney studies planetary atmospheres, atmospheric hazes, astrobiology, habitability, exoplanets, and is involved in the planning of future space telescope missions.

Education[edit]

Originally from the suburbs of Denver, Colorado, Arney completed her undergraduate degree in astrophysics at the University of Colorado Boulder. In the year she spent between undergraduate and graduate school, Giada worked at an after-school science program for elementary school students. She then began attending the University of Washington in Seattle for her PhD, where she worked on different projects ranging from mapping Venus' gas abundances to classifying the early Earth as an analog for exoplanets to research on the hazy atmosphere of the early Earth[1]. She received her dual-title PhD in astrobiology and astronomy from the University of Washington in 2016[1].

Career[edit]

Today, she is one of the deputy principal investigators of the upcoming DAVINCI orbiter and atmospheric probe mission to Venus as part of NASA's Discovery program[2]. Previously, she led the Science Support Analysis Team as well as the Early Career Focus Group for the LUVOIR flagship mission study[3], where a modified version of this mission was suggested by the Astro2020 Decadal Survey[4]. She received multiple NASA Early Career awards and was a recipient of the Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers in 2019[5].
