This utilitarianism view grants penetration testers with “ethical leeway” to show how positive results of a test outweigh any harm inflicted on test subjects to justify their means.  The research challenges that premise to strongly consider implementing ethical moderation, where a “degree of consent” could be given and lessen the harm inflicted on social engineering victims of penetration testing, while still providing the organization with valuable test outcome data.
