Pringle Wang (sometimes just refered to as Wang) is a non-contact, two-player sport played with a standard, plastic Pringles can lid (disc). The objective is to throw the disc past the opposing player.

History

First Games

First played by colleagues Justin Taylor and Adam Roberts in September 2008, the game began as a work-time recreational pursuit. The idea was to find the most interesting game using equipment as cheap and readily available as possible.

Officalisation

The International Federation of Pringle Wangers (IFPW) was conceived at the end of September 2008 as an administrative body to officiate over the sport, manage its regulation and to catalogue the rapid growth of Wang players. The IFPW now operates from ifpw.org.uk as well as their Facebook page

Rules

The following rules are taken from the IFPW document, Rules and Regulations (Stage Two):

Official Equipment

The following equipment is sanctioned for use in official games of Pringle Wang:

• 1 x Plastic, unadulterated Pringles lid
• 2 x Players
• 1 x Referee (optional)

Official Rules

1. Definitions

1. Dead Wang: non-scoring serves as defined by rule 4.b
2. Disc: a Pringle lid, unadulterated as defined in the list of Official Equipment
3. Serve Line: an imaginary line between the two vertical door frames of each doorway
4. Wang: one throw of the disc by a player as defined by rule 2

2. Serving

1. The serving player must stand with one foot on the serve line and throw the disc with one hand
2. Discs coming to a full stop in the server’s side of the room may be recovered and served again
3. Discs entering the opposition’s side of the room may be collected or caught and served by the opposition

3. General Play

1. Discs may be caught by the opposition only in their half of the room (caught discs may be served by the opposition)
2. Discs may be thrown against any surface except for surfaces defined in rule 5 and those pre-agreed by the players as out-of-bounds
3. A standard game is played as a best of 19 points (first to 10 points)
4. The referee, if used, may be asked to pass judgement where both players are in disagreement and the referee’s decision is final

4. Scoring

1. Discs that land on the floor behind the opposition’s serve line score one point for the server
2. Scoring discs must be in-flight when they pass the opposition’s serve line and must not have touched a surface deemed out-of-bounds by rule 3.b

5. Out-of-bounds

1. Discs touching a player cannot be scored
2. Discs touching the referee (if used) cannot be scored but may be served again by the same server
