Hervey Garrett Smith 1896 – 1979

Hervey Garrett Smith (1896-1979). Born in Bayport on January 17, 1896, was an American author, artist, and activist for the maritime community.

Graduate of Pratt Institute of New York

Flight instructor during World War I

Created many illustrations for sailing magazines and the National Geographic magazine. The National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C. holds the largest collection of Mr. Smith’s paintings.

Wrote and illustrated the following books:
