In Television
[edit]Lesbian characters in early 90's television are often depicted as side characters with little to no definitive information on whether they are lesbians or not. If an episode had a lesbian kiss or some form of homoromantic interactions with female characters, there would be a parental advisory for that specific episode. This was seen with the series Roseanne and some ad companies had requested that their commercials not play for that episode. There was also the issue of Ellen DeGeneres coming out on her show Ellen and receiving large amounts of pushback and backlash because of heteronormative views and the heterocentric culture of television.[1]
