I am currently a professor in the School of Industrial and Systems Engineering (ISyE) at the Georgia Institute of Technology, which I joined in 2015. I was born and grew up in Perth, Australia, where I did my Bachelor of Science degree, majoring in Mathematics and Computer Science, at the University of Western Australia. I also did my PhD there, which I did in the field of applied mathematics known as Operations Research (OR), studying convex quadratic programming, especially for network optimization. I was awarded my PhD in 1992. I then went to North America, where I did postdoctoral research, first at the University of Waterloo, in Canada, (1993) and then in ISyE at Georgia Tech (1994). From 1995-2008, I was a faculty member in the Department of Mathematics and Statistics at the University of Melbourne. From 2008-2014, I was a professor in the School of Mathematical and Physical Sciences at the University of Newcastle (Australia), before moving to the US to take up my current role. I have been a university educator and researcher in the mathematical sciences for 30 years now. My primary area of expertise lies in the field of OR known as integer programming. My research addresses theory, algorithms and applications for discrete optimization problems. I have worked on applications in a wide range of fields, including telecommunications, medicine, mining and transportation.
