packages are downloaded through known repositories. The default Cydia repositories are "BigBoss" (http://apt.bigboss.us.com/repofiles/cydia), "Cydia/Telesphoreo" (http://apt.saurik.com), "ModMyi" (http://modmyi.com/repo/), and "ZodTTD and MacCiti" ( http://www.zodttd.com/repo/cydia)[1] packages are installed through the list of repositories a user has installed. Apps are installed in the same location as Apple's own applications, in the /Applications directory. Jailbroken devices can also still buy and download apps normally from the official App Store. Most jailbreaking tools (each of them supporting a specific set of devices and iOS versions) install Cydia automatically, while others provide a choice to the user.

the risks in jailbreaking are mixed. Advocates offer that developer tools installed from cydia can help add extra security to your device. This is done by changing your root password from the default "alpine", using a command prompt installed through cydia[2]. However being able to install unvetted third party software on to your device can cause data loss and malware.[3]as an extra measure, Cydia has a safe mode system in place. if a installed packaged causes a device to become irresponsive, safe mode would reboot springboard in a alternate state where all tweaks and packages are temporarily disabled[4].
