Hi:

I am Netsereab G. Andom. Currently based in Sweden, I am a sociologist by training. Having earned my first degree in sociology and social anthropology from the University of Asmara, I did my Master and PhD in sociology from the Universities of Natal (South Africa) and Khartoum (Sudan), respectively. With more than a decade long of experience as a lecturer at Institutes of higher learning (mainly in Eritrea and Sudan, but also South Africa), my areas of specialization is on migration studies. While irregular cross-trans-national migration of youths from Eritrea to neighboring and far-off countries is my main area of expertise, I can dare to say that I also command fair knowledge about population mobility dynamics apparent among the Horn of the African countries.

Apart from the broader insights I have about socio-cultural, economic and political changes and transformations that Horn of African communities experience and how researchers from across the social sciences analyse and document such processes, I can comfortably discuss about types of of migration: internal and international migration (i.e., in-migration vs. out-migration, immigration and emigration), Internally displaced people related to man-made or natural calamity: war, drought/famine, earth quake, flood, development projects and the like, the nature of migration (voluntary vs. involuntary/forced), or types of migrants: asylum-seekers, refugees or labor-/economic-migrants. My research about irregular migration has also equipped me a deeper knowledge about human trafficking and smuggling that bypass inter-state borders.

The geographical regional areas that I know more embraces countries located in the Horn of African sub-region: Ethiopia, Eritrea, Sudan and Somalia.
