The Flag of the Republic of Formosa was the national flag used by the short lived Republic of Formosa in Taiwan which existed from May 23rd, 1895 until October 21st of that year. It is also known as the "Blue Field Yellow Tiger Flag" because of the yellow tiger on a blue field featured in its design. On the same day of the flag's adoption, Tang Jingsong published the Declaration of Independence of the Republic of Formosa. In 2012, after a year and a half of research, the National Museum of Taiwan determined that the Blue Field Yellow Tiger Flag was originally double-sided. The tiger's eyes which are on both sides symbolize "day and night protecting the country".[1][2]

History

The first flag of the Republic of Formosa first appeared as early as 1895 when the republic was founded
