There were 74,000 wildfires in Brazil from January to August 2019, which represents the highest number of wildfires since Brazil began to collect data in 2013, according to Brazil's space agency, the National Institute for Space Research (INPE).[1] More than half wildfires occurred in the Amazon region.[1][2][3][4][1][5] According to NASA there has been an increase in wildfires in Amazonas and Rondonia and a decrease in Mato Grosso and Pará.[6]

Cause[edit]

According to scientists and conservationists, since President Jair Bolsonaro assumed office in January 2019, he has "encouraged loggers and farmers to clear the land" resulting in an accelerated rate of loss of the the rainforest.[1]
