Conviviality, from latin convīvium, common meal, combined form of con (“together”) + vīvō (“to live”) and convivialis, means different concepts :
- It is a Neologism, created by Jean Anthelme Brillat-Savarin, and appears in his Physiology of taste (1825) to designate
the pleasure of living together, of seeking the balances necessary to establish good communication, a sincerely friendly exchange around a table. Conviviality corresponds to the process by which one develops and assumes the role of guest, this always being associated with the sharing of food, this it is superimposed with commensality.
- It is a Hispanicism used by Ivan Illich in Tools for Conviviality (1973) to qualify both tools whose function is determined by the person who handles them rather than by the one who conceives them, and a type of post-industrial society characterized by these tools, autonomy, and interdependence.
- In computer science it is the quality of a software the use of which is intuitive or which directs its user enough to require neither training nor instructions for use (this last meaning is radically opposed to the Illichian meaning).
