Finding photos the way I have, right or wrong, part 1: Flickr

Upon beginning to edit musicians' biographies, when I first started, I saw most had no photos! If you sign up for a Yahoo! email account, Flickr, is part of that, and allows free space to upload photos from users (amateurs and pros). Like Wikipedia, there's a search engine where you can type in the artist's photos you seek. It gives you a chance to add the photographers as friends and I do- I found the more I got to know those folks, they were more willing to share many more. It allows you to contact them via "flickr mail", kind of like we have here in the Wikipedia. With few exceptions (record covers -shrunken down or partial song clips --which still require a rationale), only if they can not be replaced by any other means, no photos with a copyright symbol may be used on Wikipedia. User:Moxy can explain that stuff best. Once you find photos in Flickr, and have shown you want to be a contact or friend of the photographer, you can either use their "Flickr mail", or, check their profile there, which sometimes has their actual email address. Ask if they may be willing to share the photo you want to display. Write up a little paragraph in advance. Speak from the heart. Some photographers like to have photos shared with us, as it gives them more exposure to sell others. Be sure to say that since NO photo can be uploaded to Commons with a copyright on the page, they must exchange it for a Creative Commons license. There are six of those; we only accept two. We accept the Attribution (BY) license, and the Attribution-Share Alike license (BY-SA). Both are almost alike- both legally require anyone posting the photo to give credit to the photographer, and the second also requires a link to the source where we found the photo. See! We accept the first in the Flickr chart, and the last; Attribution, or Attribution-Share Alike.

Once I receive a response from the photographer that they are interested, I explain the two licenses we can accept. The license on the page(s) of any photo you wish to upload here must be changed to one we can accept listed above. Either they can upload the photo, or you can do it. It should be uploaded in Commons, here:

Well, this info only applies to Flickr photos but nearly all my uploads came from there. I can tell you about other sources later -still not feeling well. At least this is a start as my promise to tell you my photo sources. --Leahtwosaints (talk) 03:45, 19 July 2013 (UTC)
