COGEBI is producer of industrial mica-based insulation materials that are resistant to high voltage and high temperatures. COGEBI is part of ELCIM Group. The ELCIM Group is a holding company located in the Netherlands. This abbreviation ELCIM stands for “Elinar Cogebi Insulation Materials”, which incorporates all industrial activities of the ELINAR and COGEBI.

Structure of ELCIM GROUP INDUSTRIAL[edit]

The ELCIM Group industrial activities are located in Russia (Ateptsevo - Elinar Holding Astrakhan - OAO Astrakhan GC), Belgium (Lot - Cogebi S.A.), the Czech Republic (Tabor - Cogebi a.s.), the USA (Dover - Cogebi Inc.), Malaysia (Kuala Lumpur - Cogebi Asia) and China (Hongkong - Cogebi China), Bangalore (Cogebi India).

History - COGEBI´s origins[edit]

The company “COMPAGNIE GÉNÉRALE BELGE DES ISOLANTS” (General Insulation Company of Belgium) was founded in 1929. The name was shortened to COGEBI. Company was focused on production of components used as insulation materials. Ten years later, COGEBI was the first company in Belgium to perform injection molding of cellulose acetate, which was the only thermoplastic at the time. Beginning of mica processing in Tabor, in the Czech Republic, was in 1937. In 1950 manual production of electric insulation based on mica flakes. The foundation of new plant in Tabor, which worked under the name ELECTROISOLA n.p. in 1951 and five years later (1956) started production of mica paper called Remika by thermo-chemical process. It was revolution in construction of mica insulations. COGEBI started production of mica paper called Cogemica in 1957. In 1963 was setted up a new laboratory in COGEBI, in order to formulate epoxy resins. COGEBI gained a foothold in the North American market by establishing of subsidiary under the name COGEBI Inc. in 1983. COGEBI developed new markets outside the electrical sector and ELECTROISOLA was established as a joint stock company in 1991. COGEBI established COGEBI Chine Ltd. Located in Hong Kong in 2002 and COGEBI Asia in Malaysia in 2005. The COGEBI Group has been acquired by a Russian ELINAR Group, specialized for developing, manufacturing and distribution of electrical and mica insulation materials ELINAR company is leader on their markets. COGEBI established COGEBI PRC in Shanghai. The ELCIM Group holding company- under this company belongs COGEBI and ELINAR (in 2013).

COGEBI philosophy[edit]

COGEBI GROUP uses a gift of nature, that why it´s necessary to protect environment. Natural mica has exceptional physical characteristics. It can be found throughout the world, most notably in the presence of Paleozoic rocks. Accessible deposits are located primarily in India, on the American continent, in southern Africa and in Russia. Mica’s chemical composition places it in a group of aluminum silicates.

Two types are extracted - Muscovite, in which there is a predominance of potassium. And the second is Phlogopite, in which the presence of magnesium can be detected. COGEBI has perfected technology that allows the agglomeration of mica fragments to create a homogenous material in continuous production. The COGEBI process subjects the mineral to the action of a highly pressurized water jet, producing flat particles several microns thick, whose physical and chemical properties have been carefully preserved.

The resulting water slurry is fed to a special type of paper machine, which forms a continuous sheet of mica paper. At this stage, there is no need for a binding agent to hold the particles together, because their existing natural intermolecular attraction is usually sufficient. This 100% mica paper is called Cogemica®, and is based on either Muscovite or Phlogopite. And another type of COGEBI’s mica paper is called Remika®, which is based on calcined Muscovite mica. On contrary to Cogemica, flat paper particles of Remika are created by processing mica through thermal delamination. The use of Cogemica or Remika is given by the requested properties of the final application.

Specialization[edit]

ELCIM is focusing on fire protection (cable tapes, aircraft flame barriers), high voltage insulation (resin rich tapes, VPI tapes and other complementary insulation products) and industrial applications (induction furnaces, commutator insulation, thermal protection).

Cables[edit]

Cable applications include emergency lighting, smoke extractors, telephones, lifts, signal equipment, control and command units, emergency pumps, IT centers etc. in order to guarantee maximum safety and to ensure that such equipment, which is strategically important in case of a fire. Under the registered trademarks Firox® and Pyronax®, COGEBI produces a range of tapes based on mica paper, reinforced with glass fiber fabrics. These tapes have great flexibility and high tensile strength, and their combined characteristics mean they can be used to create inorganic, fire-resistant insulation for electrical cables.

Cogebi Group offers Firox® and Pyronax® (these tapes are manufactured using Muscovite mica or Phlogopite mica, characterized by its high thermal resistance properties. They have high tensile strength and good shearing and shock resistance and their flexibility allows them to be used with the thinnest conductors. Also they retain their exceptional properties at both very low and very high temperatures, in conditions which would make other materials unsuitable, Firox® and Pyronax® do not give off fumes at high temperatures. Both maintain their insulating properties even at 1000°C / 1832°F and also both have high radiation resistance.

Gaskets[edit]

COGEMICA HI-Temp has been developed for the production of high temperature resistant gaskets up to 1000° C (1832°F). It does not contain any asbestos and is inert to most chemical substances. Gaskets made of Cogemica Hi-Temp are used in automobile exhaust manifolds, gas turbines, gas and oil burners, heat exchangers and in other flange connections. It is also used as a filter for spiral wound gaskets and as a material for camprofile seals. Cogemica Hi-Temp is a material containing a high percentage of phlogopite mica paper impregnated with a silicone binder. Mica has a lamellar and non-fibrous structure representing a safe alternative to asbestos. This material gives „Hi-Temp“ its thermal characteristics – weight loss at 800°C less than 5% - and its chemical resistance to solvents, acids, bases and mineral oils.

Furnaces[edit]

To protection of coils in induction furnaces you can use Cogemicanites 504. All the Cogemicanites 504 products were developed specifically for use as thermal, electrical and even mechanical insulation of induction furnace. The products are made from Phlogopite mica which is the most resistant type of mica (1200°C) with a small amount of heat resistant binding agent. These materials are used as insulation of coils in induction furnaces. They are placed between the coil and the refractories inside the furnace to protect the coil from possible damage by leakage of molten metal. Cogemicanite 504 is available in different designs and can be delivered in sheets or rolls.

Heating[edit]

COGEBI Group uses rigid plates called Cogemicanite 505 (there are mica laminates designed for outstanding electrical insulation even at high temperatures. It is possible to use it for various applications (punched pieces, heating elements for extrusion machines, separating panels for fuel cells and electrical batteries). COBEGI offers flexible plates called Cogemicanite 132 (it is flexible micanite which can be formed at room temperature and is absolutely free of asbestos. They are used in electro- domestic appliances, such as hairdryers, fan-heater type space heaters, circuit breakers, transformers etc. The next product which belongs to heating is thick rigid plates called Cogetherm (It is simply a thick mica laminated designed for electromechanical and thermomechanical applications). Cogetherm plate can be placed between the plate and the die to prevent the loss of heat in the press mechanism. In high voltage equipment, Cogetherm is used because of its dielectric strength and its resistance to arcing and electrical erosion and also because of its thermal and electrical insulation properties and its permeability to high frequency wavelengths.
