Hi, I am Onelia. I live in Miami, Florida and came with my family to the US as a political refugee from Cuba in 1980. My father served seven years as a political prisoner in Cuba (out of 15-year sentence). I am interested in freedom of speech, photography, art, theater, music, historical preservation, and issues regarding children with learning disabilities. I have been writing about Internet issues since 1999. I was first introduced to the Internet in my last journalism class at Florida International University in the Fall of 1995. I have used Wikipedia as source material for research in stories and have recently started to contribute and make updates. I have worked as a web editor for various websites since 1999. In addition, I was awarded a National Press Foundation Fellowship for editors and writers program on E-commerce from Vanderbilt University in 1999, and was named a Fellow for the Knight Community Info Challenge Boot Camp in 2012. Memberships: Member of the Society of Professional Journalists, National Association of Hispanic Journalists, Online News Association, and the Professional Photographers Guild of Florida. I volunteer at various nonprofits, including the Read to Learn Reading Circle and book drive held in conjunction with The Children’s Trust, The Miami Book Fair and Books & Books. The Read to Learn Books for Free donates children’s books to 40 bookshelves in Miami including DCF, juvenile hall, and doctors’ offices.
