Oumou Y. Bah-Sow is the first female in Guinea to be first (highest overall score) in the Baccalaureat. After a brilliant medical school in Algeria and a doctoral school in Paris, France, she became the first female to obtain a Ph-D in medicine. She may be among the first five Guinean nationalities to obtain a Ph-D in medicine.
Biography
[edit]Dr. Oumou Younoussa Bah-Sow has been a Professor of Pulmonology since 1990 (Paris accreditation exam). She obtained her Doctorate in Medicine and her specialty in Pulmonology at the Faculty of Medicine of Algiers. She has been trained in International Health Management at Boston University and in Epidemiology and Medical Statistics at INSERM (Paris) and the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine (London). Dr. Bah-Sow carries out intense university and public health activities.
At the Conakry Faculty of Medicine (UGANC) where she is a teacher-researcher, she is head of the department and director of the school of Pneumology, and coordinator and principal investigator of several research projects on tuberculosis, HIV / TB, respiratory infections, some of which are multicentric. She has been a member of the board of the Doctoral Exam (Professorship Examination) of the African and Malagasy Council for Higher Education (CAMES) since 2008. She is the scientific coordinator of the International Course of Management of tuberculosis (TB) and TB / HIV organized every year by the WHO, WAHO and several other partners in Ouidah region of Benin.
As part of her public health activities, she planned and implemented the national tuberculosis control program in Guinea, which for years has been the WHO model DOTS program in West Africa. She has been active in the fight against tuberculosis in Africa and around the world, earning her the Karel Styblo Public Health Award in 2003 and the Africa Hero Award in 2017 from the International Union Against Tuberculosis and Respiratory Diseases (UICTMR / Union).
She was President and then Secretary-General of the Africa Region of UICTMR / The Union International Alliance Against Tuberculosis and Respiratory Diseases. She has been actively involved in the fight against HIV / AIDS in Guinea as the head of the Epidemiology and Case Management section of the National HIV / AIDS Program. She was a member of the Technical Review Panel (TRP) of the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis, and Malaria (GFATM) from 2008 to 2012. She has been a WHO staff member and consultant for many years and has provided support to more than 20 countries in Africa and Haiti in TB, TB / HIV, community TB.
She is President of the National Ethics Committee for Health Research (NECHR/CNERS) in Guinea, which has been heavily involved in the fight against the Ebola epidemic, this earned her a commendation from the Director-General of WHO in 2017. She is a founding member and President of the Guinean Bio-Security Association (AGUIBIOS). Many other activities have marked her career. She is a member of several national and international NGOs.
Early life
[edit]Pr. Bah-Sow was born in Dalaba Prefecture in the Mamou Region of Guinea.[1], Republic of Guinea. She started elementary at the age of seven years old. This was during the colonization era in the country, her teachers quickly recognize that she is brilliant and deserves to be sent to the all-girl middle school in Conakry upon finishing elementary school.

[edit]She has saved over 15,000 lives since the day she opened the first Tuberculosis center in Guinea. She is a "real" doctor that truly knows what the Sermons of Hypocrrat means.
Personal Life
[edit]Pr. Sow has been married to her husband El. Hadj Sow for a half a century and counting. This is an exceptional accomplishment for the couple. They need to write a book that the younger generation may use as a reference. They have a daughter and a son.

Philosophical and/or Advocacy
[edit]Pr. Bah-Sow is apolitical and an advocate for women's rights, opposing child marriage and polygamy.[2] Pr. Bah-Sow has also been a goodwill ambassador for the World Health Organization and UNICEF

Honours, decorations, awards, and distinctions
[edit]She has received several other national and international awards and honors including the Knight of the National Order of Merit and the Medal of the "Model Woman" of the Republic of Guinea. She was selected among "Africa's 50 Distinguished Daughters" by the UN Commission for Africa and the African Center for Women (ACW). She has numerous publications in international journals such as NEJM, Lancet, Int. J Tuberc.Lung Dis., Plos One, Clin Trials, Am J Resp. crit. Care Med., Infect.genet. evol., the Review of Respiratory Diseases and more.
