McQuaid Jesuit has always been recognized for its' athletic achievements. Most recently one sport has been making McQuaid history. McQuaid's soccer team won sectionals, regional's, and placed second in the state in 2005, and in 2006 and 2007 placed second in sectionals. This article will be focusing on the successful 2005 year team.

For the 2005 season, there were many high hopes. This team had 15 returning players including 10 seniors. Of these ten seniors, many had already been awarded for their soccer skills and most were prepped to play in college. The team composed of another 11 new players which were also notably known for their skill.

The season started well with a 6-0 record. Each of these games was won by quite a margin and this team was living up to the hype. Then tragedy struck in a devastating loss to Pittsford Mendon High School. It was an unfortunate loss, but it made the team stronger and built up their determination. This loss did bring about a lot of skepticism from other schools around the area, believing that the McQuaid team had a fluke winning streak. These critics were quite wrong. This team continued their success all the way through the rest of the season not losing a single game. They ended the regular season with a record of 20-1-2. Throughout the season, McQuaid, for the first time in its history, received a state ranking of being 5th in the state.

At the end of the season, McQuaid had earned the number 1 seeding spot for the Section V class AA sectionals. The first two games were won easily by the top seeded team looking foward to the final. The sectional final was against Webster Thomas High School which had been right behind the McQuaid team throughout the entire year. It was a hard fought match from both sides. With 5 minutes to go McQuaid was down 3-2, but thanks to a defensive error Joe Mort, senior captain, was able to put it into the back of the net. The game went into overtime with the score of 3-3. It was about 20 minutes into the sudden death overtime when McQuaid had received a free kick about 20 yards away from the Webster goal. Dave Vogt, senior captain, took the kick and it went right into the upper right corner of the goal. MCQUAID WON! For the first time since the founding of the school, the McQuaid Jesuit soccer team had won a sectional title.

The team continued on with their success, going to win a regional title and placing second in the state. This state final game seen by many would have been a victory for McQuaid if senior captains Trevor Packer and Joe Mort would have been able to play. They had been forced to remain on the bench due to a Yellow card regulation and an injury. Even though they lost the state final, the accomplishments of this team will go down in history at McQuaid.
