The magnificent Kashmiri stag commonly known as Hanglu(hangulu) is the pride of Kashmir.The name is given as Hanglu because of the Horns they wear i.e 'Han Loon'.They are the National animal of Kashmir.It is the only European species to exist in Indian sub continent.The Hanglu belongs to the red deer species and is the most handsome among that species.
It is known for it's horns which consists of many points.In the 1940's they are nearly 2000-3000 in number but at present they have reduced to 150.They are considered to be severely Endangered under IUCN Red list.
=== Reasons for Extinction ===
One of the main reason for their extinction is they are being hunted by the terrorists nearby for their prey.The other reason is that there are no precaution measures taken to save them.Also,due to some illegal activities like over grazing,Poaching etc. they are in such critical condition.
Also they are listed under Schedule-1 of WildLife Protection Act-1972 and J&K Protection Act-1978.
They are purely herbivorous.The Hangul feeding habits varied according to resource availability in different seasons.
