Butterface[edit]

The term butterface is a slang term that is derived from the combination of the words: but, her and face. When used in a sentence, butterface is a noun that refers to a woman with a body or figure of some merit, however the woman is severely lacking in facial beauty. The only use of this word is to describe the way a woman looks. Males tend to use this word to denigrate a particular female. Some guys can use this term to describe particular activities a friend may have partaken in during the previous inebriated night. However, this term is not only limited to guys talking about girls. Some girls can describe guys that are super buff but have ugly faces. Other spellings or terms include buttaface, butherface, brownbag special and bagger. However one may look at it, the term butterface is a distinctly used term to describe the female form.

Origin[edit]

Although nobody has claimed the creation of the word butterface, it is safe to assume that the term is derived from the combination of the words but, her, and face. For example, when spoken in a sentence: That girl has a nice body, but her face is ugly. Butterface is one of the simpler slang terms to understand because it sounds similar to the words it is derived from. The creation of the word is related to portmanteau. The blending of words has created many slang terms. Butterface is a neologism because it is heard in today’s culture, yet it is not in any dictionaries.

Miss Buttaface Contest[edit]

The Miss Buttaface Contest was held in Las Vegas, Nevada in 2004, and was hosted by Howard Stern. This “beauty” pageant featured an array of women wearing scantly clad clothing, and wearing bags over their heads. The women then walked around and were judged by: Howard Stern, Artie Lang, Robin Quivers, Ralph Cirella, Baba Booey, Frank Norellis and celebrity guest judge Rob Schneider. The women were then ranked one to ten (with ten being the best) based on how good their physique looked. After being judged, the women took the bag off their head. They were ranked one to ten (with ten being the ugliest) on the ugliness of their face. The sum of their two scored were added together and compared to each other. The show was sponsored by Hitman: Contracts and Special Agent 47 presented the winner with a $25,000 prize. The winner was contestant number 5, Michelle.

Butterface Scandal[edit]

The Mirror, a British magazine reported that Kelly Osbourne reportedly called Lady GaGa a butterface. “She’s a ‘Butter Face’. She's got everything but the face... She reminds me of Peaches Geldof. I love Lady GaGa’s tracks but I wish she’d keep her mouth shut. She talks way too much and has too much attitude. It’s starting to make me go off her.” She later denounced the allegations on Perezhilton.com. "I have a big mouth and that's no secret. I often say things that get me into trouble but I always stand by them. But when words are being put into my mouth and things are being printed that I did not say, it really makes me really mad. I am a huge fan of Lady GaGa. If anything I'm slightly jealous of her wardrobe and I am definitely in no position to be calling anyone a butter face." This example shows how common this term is used in society.
