Christopher Miles Johnson, M.D., M.A.

Christopher Miles Johnson is a pediatric intensive care physician (pediatric intensivist), born in 1952 in Yellow Medicine County, Minnesota. Both his father and grandfather were physicians in rural Minnesota.

Educational Background

He received his undergraduate degree in history and religion from Haverford College, Haverford, PA, graduating in 1974 magna cum laude and phi beta kappa. He graduated from Mayo Medical School in 1978. He did his residency in pediatrics at Vanderbilt University Medical Center and fellowships in pediatric infectious diseases and hematology research at Mayo Graduate School of Medicine. He received an M.A. in history of medicine from the University of Minnesota in 2000.

Professional Work Experience

Johnson was appointed staff consultant at the Mayo Clinic in 1984. In 1988 he founded and was director of the Mayo Pediatric Intensive Care Unit until 2000. During his time at Mayo he rose to the position of professor of pediatrics and directed a research laboratory in endothelial cell function. After leaving Mayo in 2000 he worked at Memorial Hospital in Colorado Springs, before leaving that position in 2008 to direct the pediatric intensive care unit at CentraCare Health in Saint Cloud, MN.

Publications

Johnson is the author of 43 research papers and book chapters in the medical literature as well as four books for general readers: Your Critically Child (2007), How to Talk to Your Child's Doctor (2008), How Your Child Heals (2010), and Keeping Your Kids Out of the Emergency Room (2014).
